Olivia nervously paced the floor, anxiously awaiting her husband's return. Vanessa, lounging in an armchair, watched her, not quite as nervous, but her nerves were growing. Every once in a while, Olivia would look up at the door that she was walking in front of, as if that would make the boys return any faster.
Luckily, the drinks and medicine Olivia had given Vanessa worked without a flaw, as she felt much more awake and revived, ready to help the head of the Institute with the latest crisis. It was the least she could do, since Olivia had patched her up when Vanessa arrived.
It had been 12 very long minutes since her husband had left, and Olivia had been counting each and every one, glancing at the clock more frequently then she would look at the door. She was definitely not a nervous person by nature, but the worried tone in Oliver's voice and the quick way Godric had left gave her plenty of reasons to worry.
Godric had insisted she stay behind, despite his wife's quiet begging. She was needed here, to prepare the infirmary and medicine. From the sound of it, they were going to have to work quickly when the three returned. Olivia had done all she can, and now all she could do was wait.
The doorbell rang, and Olivia rushed to answer it, despite her confused thoughts. Godric and the boys would just walk in. Opening the door anyway, Olivia was shocked to find a blonde-haired, blue-eyed teenager before her.
"Who are you?" She asked, gritting her teeth in impatience. "Sorry, come in. Forgive us, we're a little busy at the moment, so the tour will have to wait. I'm Olivia, on of the heads here. Just... go take a seat or something."
With the new distraction out of the way, Olivia continued her pacing, trying to ignore her gut feeling that something was terribly wrong.

Egan had come off the subway train later than he had expected. There was some sort of delay but he didn't really pay attention. The subway sort of reminded him of the monorail in Atlanta. He didn't mind it, being close to mundanes, that is. Most Shadowhunters did just that, hunted in the shadows obscured from anything that dealt with the mundane world. He was quite the exception, thanks to his father. With that thought he felt a bitter taste in the back of his throat. It wasn't that he hated his father, he just was angry with him. Egan couldn't see why he had to be hidden away, not taught his heritage like everyone else his age.

That is why, when he was 18 he told his father he was going to leave for New York to train there with people who would actually help him. His father agreed, though he had no choice, Egan was 18 he could do what he liked. Most of the knowledge he had came from hours upon hours of studying the books and teaching himself. He was quite skilled at hand-to-hand combat and with his seraph blades. He has only fought a few things, a vampire here, a werewolf there, but never a demon or a fey.

The cold hit him like a wall, flushing his tan cheeks. He brought his coat tighter around him as he hailed a cab to take him to the Institute. He sat there contemplating what it would be like. What the others would be like. Would they be friendly, wary, unwelcoming? Egan sighed inwardly as he spun his mother's ring in his hand. Everything would have been different if she was alive. The car halted and Egan got out, paid the man who looked unsure of why a kid would want to come to a run down building, and proceeded up the stairs.

Once the door opened Egan flashed the woman a smile. She was pretty and not as welcoming as he would have thought. He nodded as he entered and exhaled as he threw his bag next to a chair. Of course he would come when it wasn't the best time. He did always have bad timing. He looked over to see another girl in the room and gave her a curt nod and smile as well. By everyone's expressions and body language he could tell there was something up, something not good either.

Vanessa let her head fall back, her body lying across the overstuffed armchair, leaving her legs dangling aimlessly in the air. Mia had found her way to her, rubbing her head against her owner’s hand, begging for attention. After a quick belly rub and a ruffle of the ears, the dog seemed satisfied, and turned around a few times before curling up at the foot of the chair. With nothing else to occupy her attention and the stupor of before now cleared away, Vanessa was left to the same anxious waiting Olivia was infected with, Mia's snores now an unlikely soundtrack.
It had all happened so quickly. The call had come and Godric had left. Olivia had later told her in an urgent voice she'd yet to hear from the motherly woman that the boys had gotten into some trouble. Jasper was seriously wounded. Even though she barely knew the boy, the news had struck urgency in her that matched the Head's tone. He had been so nice to her on the roof. All she could do was wait along with Olivia, ready to help out with anything if need be.
The introduction of the Shadowhunter boy had been unexpected, almost a side thought to both. The boy had come in and taken the seat Olivia had offered him. Vanessa could tell he was surprised at the welcome he'd been given, and she felt bad for him. She readily returned the smile he sent her way with one of her own small ones. She knew what it was like to be new and alone, feeling like no one cared.
Somewhere in the Institute a clock tolled out the hour, each chime matching the pacing footsteps of Olivia.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thunk. Thunk. Thunk.
The silver daggers landed in the dummy with lethal procession, all hitting the bodily kill zones, of course. Twirling the fourth dagger in her hands, Mikki took a moment to admire the excellent quality of the weaponry. It was light and easy to maneuver as all three of her hits testified to.
After getting lost about 500 times in the mazelike hallways, Mikki finally found the weapons room, her temper having reached its peak after the fourth dead end she'd run into. It was like they wanted her break through every goddamn door. They seriously needed to invest in a map. What she'd found, though, basically made up for all the trouble she'd been put through. Walls and walls and walls of shiny silver, thick bronze, and sharp steel. It was a warrior’s wet dream. Mikki had to snap herself out of the trance to keep herself from drooling. There was a far better use for her time staring right at her.
Godric found Mikki testing out the bronze axes an hour later. He'd come down to grab a serph blade just in case the vampires had followed Oliver and Jasper. He explained everything to her as he picked out the blade and named it. In too much of a hurry to catch her response, Godric swiftly exited the weapon’s room, leaving Mikki to ponder the news.
So, Jasper was seriously injured. Might even die. On normal circumstances, she would have just scoffed at the foolishness of running into a vampire's den with only one other Shadowhunter as back up and gone right along with her testing of the Shadowhunter’s arsenal. But, she had unfinished business with Jasper. He couldn't die. She had to tell him she knew she'd crossed the line with her joke. That she was sorry.....A ghostly stole over her. A memory? This was about as close to caring about another person as Mikki had gotten in far too long.
Turning the dagger over in her hand, she caught a glimpse of her face in the reflective metal. Was that a crease of worry between her eyebrows?
Thunk.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Derek hadn't questioned anything when Bridget returned to the town car with two strangers, claiming they were her friends and they wanted to become a part of the New York Institute. Not a word crossed his lips when the new girl, Nina, held on to his hand just a little too long as he helped her into the car, nor when he felt the almost too intense gaze of the brother on the back of his neck, as the car made it's dreary way out of the parking lot and onto the paved road. Bridget surely knew what she was doing.
All through the car ride, Derek couldn't help throwing quick glances in Bridget’s direction. Nina seemed to have an unending supply of stories, laying them one on top of the other in front of Bridget. Her responses were the expected ones, but the tone of her voice alerted him to the fact that she was still grieving. Maybe the funeral had helped, but she was still in pain. Reaching out his hand, Derek subtly took her small one in his. She was so small in that moment.
The town car pulled up to the Institute, stopping to let the four teenagers out, driving away when they made their way up to the run down building that only the driver saw. Calling out the usual words, Derek felt the door handle open under his callused hands, opening onto the entry way....that was a little too crowded for a normal day.
Letting the door shut behind the Markweather siblings and Bridget, Derek stared out at the three people currently occupying the entry way. Vanessa was lounging in one of the overstuffed armchairs that ran along the wall, her dog snoozing in front of her. Olivia, a woman he had not seen in quite some time, had just paused in what must have been a very intense session of pacing. And, a lone boy, sitting on another chair along the wall, looked up at the newcomers, an interesting expression coloring his face.
"Olivia, it's so good to see you." Derek chose to start with a normal greeting, instead of spouting off the long list of questions he had concerning the almost visible layer of anxiety in the room. Enveloping the Head in a warm hug, he drew back and smiled down at a woman who had been more a mother to him than he deserved.
"I'm guessing Godric's around here somewhere. I wanted him to meet the three more additions to our ranks. This is Bridget White, who arrived yesterday, and Nina and Nathan Markweather, who we met today while Bridget and I were out," Derek said, stepping back so Olivia could see the Markweathers and Bridget.

Olivia hugged Derek back, happy to see him again. This boy was practically her own, and she hadn't realized how much she'd missed him until now. Any other time, she would have began drilling him with the usual catching up questions, but the three Shadowhunters behind him stopped her short, so she satisfied herself with "I think you've grown even more," before turning to the new arrivals.
Bridget, she remembered, was expected. Parents recently dead. Olivia could see the grief written all over her face, despite her small efforts to put up a brave front. The red mourning runes spiraled up her arm, and although she wasn't crying, and gave her a pleasant smile when Derek introduced her, the poor girl's eyes looked dead. Olivia, ever the motherly one, wanted to pull this new girl close and never let go, desperate to fix her pain.
The other two, Nina and Nathan, siblings apparently, seemed at ease and confident. Where as Derek was regurlarly looking at Bridget, as if to make sure she was ok, the other two weren't. They were looking around the Institute, and Olivia got an uneasy vibe from them. She cast it aside though, the day was already messed up enough to leave her permanently nervous.
"Godric, actually, is away. Oliver, who I think you've met, and Jasper were out interrogating some vampires, and it seems that they've gotten in a little trouble. Jasper's hurt. They should be back any minute," Olivia again glanced at the clock, which had recently chimed. They'd been gone for 20 minutes.
"But, it's nice to meet you. Welcome to the Institute." Giving the new people a tight smile, she shook their hands. Olivia found herself wishing that all them could have come on a better day. Catch her when she's not worried sick, Olivia was a very nice and welcoming person. The first impression she'd given was probably ruined.

Bridget let Derek lead her inside, the siblings following her closely behind. Derek held her hand most of the way, and Bridget didn't question it, grateful for the comfort. She did, however, wonder what the look Nathan was giving him was about. Was that the awful emotion of jealousy she saw? Annoyance? Bridget couldn't be sure, and she decided not to worry. Whatever problem there was could be sorted out later. Right now, all she wanted was to drown herself in a hot shower.
The numbness that had taken over her body was broken a little when Olivia said that Jasper, and more specifically, Oliver, were out working on some vampires. She hadn't seen Oliver this morning, as Derek and her had left early in the morning, before he'd woken up. She found herself a little concerned now, but that was about all she was feeling besides an overwhelming, scary brokeness. Even the slight elation she'd felt at seeing her old friends was gone by now.
Returning the head's smile, Bridget shook her hand. "Nina and Nathan are childhood friends of mine," She said, stepping aside. The siblings both shook Olivia's hand as well, copying Bridget's smile.

Egan sat back in the chair, his eyes scanning the room he was in. It all looked old, but well taken care of. It was nothing like the Institute back home. In Atlanta the inside was all decked out in modern furnishings. They had egg chairs, which were his favorite, tables made of metal or fine wood in intricate designs. A glass couch which unfortunately didn't last that long. While the outside looked about the same, the insides were totally different. He noted the girl's smile towards him and then watched the Head of the Institute wander back and forth in a worried motion. He wondered vaguely what had happened as he looked at the dog laying next to the girl's feet.

Then the door to the institute opened and three people wandered in. Egan sat up a curious look on his face. By the Head's expression she could tell it wasn't who she was waiting for. Egan was good a reading people, it was a gift of his, at least that is what his father would say. The guy spoke first, calling the Head by name, as they embraced in a hug. Clearly he had been here for some time. His eyes then lingered to the girl called Bridget. Her eyes rimmed with red, it was no doubt she was upset about something. Egan then looked at the two others who were brother and sister, Nina and Nathan. They seemed a bit peculiar, their wandering eyes, but Egan put it up to being in a new place. At least he wasn't the only new one here anymore. He heard Olivia tell the guy who hadn't said his name, what happened. Vampires, one named Jasper was injured. So that would explain it. Egan sat back in his chair again and just listened.

"Oliver put more pressure on gash on his shoulder!" Godric shouted directions from the drivers seat of the old town car he was driving very aggresively through the streets, taking as many shortcuts as he could.
The scene had been a mess when he'd arrived, it was worse than he would've thought. Jasper was skilled, especially with vampires Godric knew. He also knew that Oliver was a skilled fighter as well, so he hadn't thought a bunch of regulars could have done so much damage. Godric had pulled up to the alley they had been in to find a Oliver holding a very blood soaked Jasper up against a wall to stop some of the bleeding. "How did this happen?!" Godric asked bewildered and alarmed. When Oliver spoke unease set in inside Godric, "Christopher is back." That was enough for Godric he threw open the back door and told Oliver to get Jasper in. When both the boys were in Godric sped off.
"Shit Godric the bleeding is getting worse!" Oliver's voice came from the back seat. Unfortuately Godric couldn't go anywhere. He was stuck at an intersecion with a traffic director who was lazily letting to many cars go by from certain areas. "Dammit! Hurry up!" Godric shouted at the man through the windshield, slamming his fists against the steering wheel. As soon as the man directed his section Godric slammed the gas pedal. Please Jasper...please don't die.

Pulling up to the Institute Godric told Oliver to run ahead and get the doors open. Parking the car he jumped from the drivers seat, worry, panic, anger, were all the feelings running through him at the moment. His fatherlike mentality setting in. Jasper was practically his son, and here he was, in the back seat of a car broken. Picking the boy up and carrying him in front of him, one arm supporting his back, the other under his knees, Godric sprinted towards Institute doors. When he arrived he saw the shocked faces of many people. His wife had tears streaming down her face, Oliver covered in blood looked worried, Vanessa and a knew boy Godric had never seen sat bolt up right at the sight of them. Then there was Derek, his other almost son, standing there looking confused and worried, the other boy and the two girls next to him seemed confused as well. The one person Godric had hopped wasn't there happend to walk into the room as soon as he did. Mikki. Her face had gone pale.
Realizing he needed to hurry Godric spoke, "Liv we have to hurry. He's lost a tremendous amount of blood." Turning to Oliver, "Oliver help me get Jasper into one of the beds in the infirmary." Finally he looked to the only other person he knew to count on, "Derek, I'm going to need a sling, as well as one of the skinny knives from the weapons room. He needs glass dug out of several places." Immediately everyone moved, Olivia called Vanessa with her to get supplies, Derek had gone off towards the weapons room, and Oliver was now holding Jasper's legs as they walked. As they passed Mikki, Jasper made his first concious movement in what seemed like a life time. He reached out and grabbed her hand while managing to choke out, "It....it's not your fault. Y...you didn't know. I'm sorry." Just then his arm fell limp and Godric could feel Jasper's body starting to give up.

As the seconds after hanging up with Gordric became minutes, Olivers panic was turning into dread. Jasper had lost too much blood, most of it was soaking through Olivers clothes at this point and all he could do was continue putting as much pressure on what appeared to be the worst of the boys wounds as he watched what could have been his only friend in the world bleed out before his eyes. A feeling of hopelessness washed over him as he looked down at his own shaking, blood soaked hands. ‘This wasn’t my fault.’ He thought, biting down on his lower lip so that a bead of his own blood appeared. ‘He ran in there by himself, there was nothing I could have done.’ But even as he thought the words he couldn’t argue away the horrible guilt that had begun to eat away at him from the inside out. Jaspers pulse was beginning to fade underneath his hands and just as it seemed there was no hope, a voice shouted through the alley.
"How did this happen?!" For a split second all Oliver could do was stare at the man charging into the alley, his eyes bright with concern, questioning if the man was really there or not before relief flushed over him and he got to his feet, picking Jasper up with him.
“Christopher is back.” Was all he could manage to get out as Gordric helped him get the bleeding boy into the back seat. Oliver slid in next to him, kneeling on the small floor in front of him so he could continue putting pressure on the wounds but as the blood continued to gush out, he felt what little color that was left in his own face flood away.
“Shit, Gordric. The bleeding is getting worse.” He could hear the panic in his own voice, the desperation and it was all he could do not to start screaming. He was going to die, The boy he had met only the night before but had so easily made his way beyond the walls Oliver had spent years putting up. The boy who banter had been so effortless with and who could actually get a smile out of him, was going to die right here before his eyes. The sudden urge to jump from the car over whelmed him, he wanted to run far away from the bleeding boy in front of him, find a bottle to chase away the memories, but he didn’t move.
“Please don’t die…”

When they reached the Institute, he hesitated at Gordrics orders to go open the door, not wanting to leave Jaspers side but did as he was told, pushing his hair out of his eyes as he sprinted to the door, not noticing the blood he smeared across his face as he did so. Oblivious to the room full of people, he held the heavy door open as Gordric carried in Jasper. As the head shouted out orders and everybody sprang into action, Oliver grabbed the boys legs, relieving some of the dead weight from Gordric as they carried him up to the hospital wing.

‘Well we couldn’t have come at a better time.’ Kaleb gloated as they were introduced to the obviously distracted head. It took everything he had not to smile as she explained to the blonde boy what was happening. Ah, nothing like the smell of bloodshed in the morning. He shook the womans hand, having to redirect the glare he had been directing at the one called Dereks back since they got in the town car. He had already decided he was going to make his death extra special. But he couldn’t be more grateful for the distraction of the others, making their entrance something of an afterthought. Under the radar, the way he liked it. It didn’t take long for the men the group had been waiting for to return, one of them looking like they weren’t going to make it long. The sight of all the blood gave Kaleb a pleasant chill up his spine. As Derek was ordered to go to the weapons room, he took a step forward.
“I’ll go with you, I can help.” He followed the boy down the hall, all the way imagining how much more attractive the boy would be with a knife in his back.

As soon as Olivia got her first glance at Jasper, bloody and broken, she couldn't help the tears that bubbled up out of her eyes. One of her dear adopted sons was before her, looking like death, and it tore at her heart. She caught Godric's eyes across the room, and for that brief moment, she knew that he understood her panic and heartache. Jasper was the closest thing they had to a child of their own, they simply could not lose him.
"Liv we have to hurry. He's lost a tremendous amount of blood." The determination that masked sheer terror in her husband;s voice was almost enough to send Olivia over the edge. Taking a deep breath, Liv pulled herself together, knowing she'd need to be calm and collected to be any help. Wiping her eyes, the head nodded, and called Vanessa to her. Following her husband and Oliver, who were carrying Jasper, the two girls ducked into a little room just off the side of the infirmary.
"Vanessa, why don't you grab bandages, as many as you can, please." Olivia requested, speaking quickly as she picked up medicinal herbs, and then got her stele out. As an afterthought, she grabbed some holy water for good measure.
When they returned to the infirmary, Godric and Oliver were laying Jasper onto a hospital bed. Already, the boy's blood stained the white sheets, leaving ugly, horrifying crimson stains.
Now with a patient in front of her, for the moment Olivia forgot who's life was exactly at state. The rational part of her mind took over, and calmly went about the order of things. She could cry later. Right now, all that mattered was saving Jasper.
"Someone use some of the holy water to clean of the wounds." Olivia commanded, as she took her stele and began drawing an elaborate healing rune above Jasper's collarbone.
Taking a quick glance up from her work, Olivia's gaze went straight to Oliver. The boy seemed worried beyond belief, and Liv knew what the dangers of having him in here could bring to healing Jasper. "Oliver, I think you should leave. I promise, as soon as we're finished someone will come get you." Her tone was nice, but everyone could tell that was a direct command.

All chaos begin when Oliver and the head came in with the injured boy, Jasper. Bridget could only watch with wide, horrified eyes as the scene unfolded before her. She couldn't help but notice the blood that covered Oliver's body, and only hoped that it was his friend's, and not his own.
As Derek received his command, he started to walk off, but then turned back to Bridget, to see her standing there, lost. She wanted to help, but was unsure how to do so. Everyone seemed to have their own task, and here she was, perfectly capable of assisting.
"Take Egan and Nina up to their rooms. It'll give Olivia and Godric one less thing to worry about, knowing that the new people are taken care of." He squeezed her hand a little, as if to reassure her, and then walked off toward the weapon's room. Nathan followed him, and Bridget again had to tell herself that she must be imagining the strange look he was giving Derek.
Turning to her childhood friend and the other new person, Bridget led the two upstairs. "I haven't actually been here long, so I can't give you a decent tour, but it'll be good to go ahead and get you to your rooms."
Once upstairs, Bridget took a moment to remember where everyone's rooms were, and then walked over to a door. "I'm sorry, I never caught your name, but you can stay here," Bridget said to the new boy, motioning to the door. "My room is right across from it," she said, "Vanessa's is next to yours, Derek's is to the right of mine, and Oliver's is to the left." She pointed to each door in turn.
"And here, Nina, take the room next to his. Kaleb can have the room next to you. That way we're all kind of close by," Bridget said, rambling a little. She really wished there was a better way to help instead of playing tour guide for the new people.
"If that's all right with you, I think I'm going to back downstairs and help. Make yourselves at home, and if you need anything come find me." Bridget forced a pleasant smile onto her face, and then turned on her heel and started down the stairs, making her way back to the infirmary.

After getting Jasper to the bed, all Oliver could do was hover. He felt so useless in this white room, healing was never something he took an interest in and he cursed himself for that now. All he could do was watch as Gordric began to wash the wounds with holy water, some of the skin sizzling where the vampire must have cut him directly. He stood frozen beside the bed, watching the steam rise from the burning flesh, hardly hearing Olivia as she spoke to him.
"Oliver, I think you should leave. I promise, as soon as we're finished someone will come get you."This caught his attention, snapping his head up, immediately defensive.
“No, I’m not going anywhere. I’m not leaving him.” He said talking a step towards the bed to prove a point, but Gordric had already taken him by the shoulders and was leading him out of the room, only tightening his grip when Oliver tried to wiggle free of his grasp. A string of profanities was on his tongue but he didn’t have time to spit them at the man before the door shut in his face, allowing only one last glance at his friend lying bloody and broken on the bed, now out of his reach before the sound of the lock echoed through the hall.
He stood still, staring at the thick wood of the door for a long moment before the silence finally hit him. This was the first time he had been alone since he woke up and the emotions from the day were crashing over him. How great would it be if Jasper died on the same day as his mother? The universe had a pretty crappy sense of humor… All the pain and grief he felt all turned to anger at once and before he knew what he was doing, he was slamming his fists against the stone of the hall, blood flowing freely from his knuckles, mixing with Jaspers blood that covered his body.

Walking down the stairs, Bridget let her fingers loosely brush the banister, sliding her fingertips down the wood. She, of course, didn't need any help keeping her balance, the permanent equilibrium rune on her hip made sure of that, but the idea of the railing keeping her steady was comforting. In the whirlwind of events that had taken place in such a short period of time, Bridget felt that she needed some sort of support, anything to keep her standing.
It was eerily quiet outside of the commotion in the infirmary and out of the range of contact of the new people. Bridget wandered down the hallway that led to the hospital wing. It was funny that although she'd only been here for a day or so, she was comfortable enough and knew her way around. She'd settled in fairly well, considering the chaos and misery of the entire situation.
Turning the corner on what she expected would be an empty hallway, Bridget jumped a little when she saw Oliver. She stopped for a moment, shocked, and then took quick steps over to him. He didn't turn her way, didn't even acknowledge her presence. Bridget wasn't even sure if Oliver knew she was there, he seemed so distraught and angry.
"I don't think the wall has done anything to you," Bridget said quietly. Oliver looked at her, and the raw, broken emotion in his eyes echoed what she felt in her heart. After giving him a wry smile, ducking into a bathroom a few yards away from the infirmary entrance, Bridget returned with a wet washcloth.
Without a word, she took Oliver's hands, washing off the Jasper's and his own blood. Once finished, Bridget looked up at him. He had been watching her with carefully guarded eyes. Without thinking, Bridget lifted her hand, wiping at the blood that was smeared on his forehead. "I kind of thought you'd be in there helping," she said, her voice a little uneasy.

After his barrage on the wall, Oliver rested his forehead against the cold stone for a long moment, cooling his heated skin before pushing away. He began to pace up and down the hall, blood dripping freely from his knuckles as he went, leaving a crimson trial beside where he walked. He heard the footsteps approaching him but paid no attention, hoping whoever it was would just move along with their business but when he heard a soft, familiar voice he turned to face her. The sight of Bridget, still in her white dress with mourning runes spiraling up her arms made him relax momentarily. He wanted to ask her about the funeral, how she was holding up, but his brain wouldn’t form the words. Oliver watched with a steady, guarded gaze as she disappeared into the bathroom, taken aback when she returned with a washcloth and began to wash away the blood. He could feel his eyebrows knit together slightly in confusion at her actions but he didn’t pull away. No one had ever done something so kind for him, however small the gesture was but all he could do was watch her. When she reached up to wipe the blood from his face, he leaned his face into her touch for a long moment, her touch temporarily calming him. Though her unfortunate choice of words washed away any sense of peace he had felt in that moment. He jerked away from her touch, taking a defensive step away from her, anger flaring over him once more. Even in his rage, he knew it wasn’t directed at her, she had done nothing to deserve it but it was too late. Curling his hands into fists, he glowered down at her.
“Yeah, I’m stalking the halls by choice Bridget. I thought it was a good time for a stroll as he bleeds to death in there.” Olivers voice was harsh, his voice raised so that it echoed through the stone halls.

In the space of a few seconds, the atmosphere in the entry hall made a drastic change, enducing a mental whiplash of sorts on Derek. One moment he'd been on the verge of questioning Olivia, the pleasantries now passed, and the next he could only watch as his adopted father, Godric, barged in through the door, carrying a seriously wounded Jasper, Oliver following close behind. Everything was happening so fast, throwing Derek into a small flash of paralyzing shock. But, he wasn't a Shadowhunter for nothing. When the order from Godric finally came, he jolted back to life, all business now.
Giving a short nod to the new kid, Nathan, Derek aknowledged his company, almost halfway to the staircase when he registered that he'd forgotten something. Her face was so lost when he turned back to Bridget, pleading for some way to help in the chaos. He smiled inwardly at her kind nature shining through her healing grief.
"Take Egan and Nina up to their rooms. It'll give Olivia and Godric one less thing to worry about, knowing that the new people are taken care of," Derek said, squeezing her hand one last time, before turning back to Nathan and his waiting task.
Not bothering to check if the new Shadowhunter was keeping up, Derek quickly made it to the weapons room. He barely noticed the dummy that had been taken out and knifed in the middle of the floor, too busy gathering the slender knives that Godric had requested. Tossing the leather case with the knives securely inside to Nathan, Derek raced through the halls that separated the weapons room from the infirmary. He wasn't surprised to find Olivia and Vanessa already there, gathering supplies of there own. The sling was folded up in the very back of a side cabinet, causing Derek to lose precious time searching for it.
" I really hope you're as good as you say," Derek called back to Nathan, bursting through the infirmary door. The sight before him was barely organized chaos. Godric was swiftly cutting away the clothing around the wound, a sheen of sweat on his forehead showing his stress. Olivia and Vanessa had passed them in the hallway and were at hard work cleaning the wound, Vanessa efficiently handing the needed medicine to the waiting hands of Olvia. Grabbing the leather pack from Nathan's hands, Derek handed over it and the sling to Vanessa, knowing she'd get them to their use. He also knew that there was nothing left for him to do in the infirmary, except get in the way. Nathan was there to help out with Godric and Olivia, and Vanessa could help out with all the other needs.
A need to make sure Bridget was okay flooded through him. His logic told him she was a Shadowhunter too, used to taking chaotic situations on the cheek one after another. But, he'd left her in such a hurry. Now that he had fulfilled his duty to Godric, he was free to go find Bridget. Passing through the door once again, Derek was surprised to find her only a few feet away. But she wasn't alone. Oliver stood next to her. Far too close for Derek's liking. The anger in his eyes also hadn't evaded the Shadowhunter's notice.
"Bridget, Godric needs us to get some more holy water from the weapons room." It was a low move to take her away with such an obvious lie, but, in Oliver's state, she was very far away from safety in his presence. Guiding her gently away with his hand on her arm, Derek looked back, warily eying Oliver, before turning the corner.

Alexia reluctantly followed Bridget away from the turmoil in the entry way. She'd latched onto the chaos and urgency like an addict to his vice the minute the boy had been carried in, his blood a delicious crimson she'd never been able to match in a nail polish. Unfortunately, she was still pathetic Nina Markweather, the perfect girl next door, who would most likely have fainted at the sight of so much blood. Pretending just that, Lexi obediently followed Bridget, staying close to amplify the helplessness even further. She didn't even spare her brother a glance as she disappeared into the many halls of the Institute, knowing he'd play his part to the very best, a Shadowhunter with medicinal skills showing up when they needed him most. Or so they thought.
The room was typically hideous and Alexia had to hold herself back from the sneer of disgust she felt coming as Bridget held the door open for her to see. Instead she turned a sickly sweet smile on the girl.
"Oh, we're practically neighbors! You have no idea how much better that makes me feel. I was afraid we wouldn't be able to have those slumber parties we used to have all the time," she gushed, ignoring the other Shadowhunter completely. He was of no use to her at present.
"Now, go along. I have some serious unpacking to do," she said, gesturing to her large suitcase. "Plus, I can tell your itching to get down there and help. You were always like that when we were young, covering my teddy bears with band aides because you said they had owies." Bridget smiled warmly at the memory, having no idea Lexi had got it by the persuasive nature of a sharp blade. The girl gratefully turned and was gone in no time at all. With no one around, Lexi turned back to her room and let loose the snarl of disgust. The room was worse than she could ever have had expected, lacking any color. She carelessly through her suitcase down, shutting the door behind her. Loosing no time, she grabbed her cosmetic bag and walked into the bathroom. Now that she'd introduced everyone to Miss Sorority Sister now it was time to bring out Slutty Sally. Her job was to get onto everyone's good side. Smiles and giggles worked with the Heads and Bridget, but the boys were a completely different issue.
Taking out a tube of lipstick, Lexi plumped up her already pouty lips with a sexy shade of red. The messy bun had worked for nice Nina, but bad Nina pulled out the hair tie, flipped her hair, and admired the luscious curls as they settled into waves around her flawless face. Running her hands down the hip hugging, white dress, Lexi smiled at her reflection. Now for the hunt.
Her first target wasn't that hard to find. All she had to do was follow the voices. Peeking around the corner, Lexi had a front row seat to the Bridget's utter fail at comforting Oliver. She supressed a laugh when he rejected her completely. Boys like Oliver didn't react well to the cutesy, kind efforts of girls like Bridget. Lexi knew exactly what his pain filled mind need. A distraction.
Derek's introduction was perfectly timed. He towed Bridget away swiftly, obviously seeing Oliver as a danger. It amazed her what these people were scared of, when the true danger stood smiling up in there faces. Oh, well. It was on them if they were too stupid to see the tigers in their midst.
With the hall now vacant except for a still brooding Oliver, Lexi made her entrance. Slinking slowly down the hall, she looked up at Oliver through her long lashes.
" It's cute how posessive he is over her, isn't it? Got her off your back, at least," Lexi purred stopping within a couple inches of the Shadowhunter. Taking up his injured hand, she softly drew her fingers across it.
"Now, look what you've gone and done. No worries. I'll make it all better." Bringing his hand up slightly, she pressed her lips softly to the surface of his skin, avoiding the blood. Looking back up at him, she gave him a smile, all sensuality instead of the sickly sweetness.

After rolling his eyes to himself at Derek for going back and having to spoon feed Bridget directions on what she should do, he kept pace with him through the halls, making a mental note of the path they took to the weapons room. Not that his luggage wasn’t filled with his own sinister weaponry but it never hurt to know the way to get more. The weapons room was impressive, covered wall to wall in shiny instruments that were just calling to be stained with blood, not as many torture devices as he would like to see but he was a skilled assassin, and could turn even the most mediocre of items into a torturous device. He was so distracted at the thought of putting these neglected items to use that he almost didn’t notice the leather case being tossed in his direction, but he caught it with ease and tore his gaze from the weapons to follow Derek from the room. When they reached the infirmary, he sprang into action at the heads side, quickly assessing the boys wounds It was true he much preferred tearing a body apart rather than putting it back together but Slade made sure he was just as skilled at both and his mind was instantly slipping into that calm state he got into when he was at work. Once the wounds were cleaned they were able to see the extent of the damage, ugly but nothing that couldn’t be put back together.
“Gordric, we need to hold him still so we can relocate his shoulder to be able to flip him onto his back where the majority of the glass is embedded.” With the man holding Jasper still, he took hold of the boys elbow, rolling the arm up so that the ball of his shoulder could pop back into its socket. After they dugout the glass on his front side, the team was able to flip Jasper over carefully to begin extracting the glass from his back.

~~~~~~~~~~
The look on Bridgets face was enough to keep Oliver from continuing to yell but his anger still flared around him like an untended flame. Though before anything else could be said by either of them, Derek had appeared from the hospital door and swept her away. If Oliver was mad before, he was simply seething after the look Derek shot back at him and he imagined how Dereks face would look if it had been he who was next to him only a few moments ago instead of the stone wall. This thought gave him enough temporary amusement that he hardly noticed the slender figure slink into the hall to meet him. When his eyes landed on the girl, all thoughts of Derek faded from his mind, her curves not leaving much room to think of anything else. He watched her carefully as she approached him.
" It's cute how possessive he is over her, isn't it? Got her off your back, at least," Oliver snarled at the thought of those two hurrying down the hall together, rolling his eyes as he spoke.
“Unless cute has become a synonym of nauseating, I’m going to have to disagree.” His silvery eyes swept over the girls slender figure curiously. He figured this had been one of the many figures standing in the entry hall when they had arrived but even in the chaos, he wondered how he had overlooked her.
"Now, look what you've gone and done. No worries. I'll make it all better."As she brought her lips to Olivers hand, his lips quirked up at the corners in a smirk as his eyebrow arched questioningly.
“What, no naughty nurse costume? I have to admit, this fantasy seems incomplete.”
Alexia's eyes missed nothing, as she stared up into Oliver's grey-green eyes, watching his focus switch from the previous argument to her never ending curves. Poor guy, he'd never seen her coming. And now it was too late.
“What, no naughty nurse costume? I have to admit, this fantasy seems incomplete," he said, teasing her right back, his mouth falling into a smirk she guessed was a constant companion for him. Well, he obviously knew how to play the game. Let's see how he does in the professional league , she thought, her eyes glinting with far from pure intentions.
Reverting back to drawing her fingers softly across his hand in an absentminded way, Lexi never broke eye contact, keeping him completely focused on her and what she would do next.
"Well, darn, I guess I left it back in my room," she said, emphasizing her pretend forgetfulness with a pout. "I know I left it right next to my French maid costume. The buttons are so hard to do up on that one. How about you be a dear and come help me into it. I promise you won't be thinking about your hand after that." With the bait given, she watched as the expected desire clouded Oliver's gaze, the promise of her bare skin over taking everything else.
"Right this way," she purred, circling her arms around his muscled upper arm, leading him back to her room.
Derek knew he hadn't fooled her the minute they'd cleared away from Oliver. He hadn't even followed his lie up by going to the weapons room, her accusing eyes told him that wouldn't exactly work. Instead, he headed the long way around to their rooms. It had been a long day for both of them, and he expected she'd want to rest away from all the chaos in the quietness of her room. They'd gotten half way there when a jerk from her pale arms stopped him.
"I could have handled that, you know. You had no right to take me out of that. He was no danger to me," Bridget said, as angry as he'd ever seen her. It hurt to have that anger aimed at him, but he knew he deserved it. He hated the way he acted around her, as possessive as a dawn-of-time cavemen. Being around her just had a way of jumbling everything up inside him, making his usual logical mind into a mess of impulses.
“You're exactly right. You could have handled it. I just couldn't chance that he'd lash out at you. In his state, I wouldn't trust him with anyone, let alone you," Derek said, feeling the words pour out, unchecked. If he didn't stop now, he'd say something both of them weren't prepared to deal with. "I care too much for you to let that happen." Too late.
He watched with dread as her eyes clouded with confusion and then embarrassment. He saw her motives before she'd even taken the first step away from him, but was still too late to catch her before she'd made her own way off to her room.
Dammit , he thought. There was nothing else to do but follow her and try to pick up the pieces before she completely shut him out.
Lexi was only a few feet away from her door, still towing Oliver along like a lost puppy, when she heard the voices yet again. She immediately recognized them and grinned with her new plan. Improvisation had always been one of her strong suits. Drama always made for a good fighter of wills in the end, so why not stir up a little?
Dragging Oliver to her the last couple inches, her back hitting the wood of her door, she brought her lips to his, relishing in his complete lack of resistance. She felt him melt into her as she drew him closer, felt his lips add their own force as he kissed her back. All the while she was aware of the two pairs of eyes watching them.
"Well, this is my office," Lexi said, as she drew back. "Maybe if your a good little boy I'll give you a lollipop." With those last few words, she turned the knob next to her hand, and tugged him playfully into the darkness of her room, a giggle bubbling from her lips. Hook, line, and sinker.
The soft click of the door closing jolted Derek out of the surprise of walking up on such an intimate situation. Looking down on Bridget, his hand still secure on her arm, he caught a quick glimpse of something he'd been dreading, but still needed to see. She'd wiped it away so quick it was like it hadn't even been there, clear on her face. But nothing could have wiped it clear of his memory. Jealousy. As she'd watched Oliver and Lexi embracing, a feeling of jealousy had risen in her, quickly replaced by hurt. Jerking his hand away, her hurt mirrored in his own expression, Derek turned to his own door.
"I guess you were right, you can handle this on your own," he paused, his hand on the knob, knowing he'd regret the words later when his pride was no longer wounded. Closing the door behind him, he stood, his back against the wood, feeling an exhaustion no amount of demon hunts had ever brought about in him
Blackness. That's all that Jasper had been in. He'd lost track of time, of where he was, of what happened. It was only when he started coming too again that it all hit him. Like water rushing through a broken damn. Acting stupidly on anger and rushing off to fight Christopher himself. Getting his ass handed to him. Being carried into the Institute in front of everyone, even people who's faces, even in his state, he'd memorized thanks to the memory rune behind his right ear. Then Mikki. Oh God, I hope she forgives me. I was such an ass. I deserve this for how I spoke to her. As sight started to return to him he could see a figure standing over him but couldn't make out the person yet. As things started getting clearer he registered one of the new boys he'd seen. The one who had run off with Derek to get the knives. Details started to form now, and what Jasper saw he didn't like. The boy had a twisted grin on his face. Seconds later, Jasper felt something tear through the muscle in his left shoulder. He screamed in pain. Automatically he heard the boy's voice. "Godric I'm sorry. You missed a piece of glass in his shoulder. I pulled it out and it must have cut through the muscle." Now Jasper knew something was definitely wrong. Godric never misses anyting. That however was his last thought before slipping back into unconciousness.
----------------------------------------
An hour had gone by since they had returned home with Jasper. Godric hadn't rested one minute. As soon as he'd taken Oliver out of the room he'd dug into Jasper. Pouring holy water where it was needed. Pulling out ever shard of glass the boy had lodged in his body. Now he was sitting back as Olivia and Vanessa were bandaging the wounds. Please fight Jasper. Please. The thoughts were desperate. Jasper hadn't so much as twitched a finger since he'd passed out after his apology to Mikki. Godric must admit, he was proud of Jasper for that. He knew Jasper wasn't as cold hearted as he'd made himself appear. It was a touchy subject and she didn't know. All of a sudden a loud scream brought Godric back. Snapping his head up in fashion that would give most mundanes wiplash, he saw Kaleb standing over Jasper with a knife and a shard of glass in his hand. "Godric I'm sorry. You missed a piece of glass in his shoulder. I pulled it out and it must have cut through the muscle." Everything about the boy was sincere. His face was worried, his voice even shook as he spoke. "It's alright Kaleb, you were just trying to help." Pinching the bridge of his nose for a moment before speaking again, he said, "Kaleb you've been a big help. Maybe you should go get cleaned up and rest. You've earned it." He saw his wife was just as tired as he was. "You should go to Vanessa, we will call you if you're needed." He added. As the two left he turned to his wife, "He'll be ok Liv. He's a tough kid. His parents always said that about him. We just need to let him rest. I'll come back and check on him in a few hours." After a few moments of silence the couple headed to their room, as anxious as a parent could be.
As the boy in front of him was slowly pieced back together, Kaleb couldn’t contain the blood lust that was making his skin tingle. As he stood here, the others turned away leaving no witness to the cruel smile that had spread across his lips. Picking up a blood soaked piece of glass that lay on the table beside him as evidence, he took his slender knife and swiftly sliced it through Jaspers arm. It would be a critical hit in a fight, not fatal but enough to render the opponents arm useless. And to Kaleb, the more useless these shadowhunters were, the easier this mission would be and the sooner he could drop this nice guy act. . As the cry of pain escaped the boys lips, Kaleb easily changed from a pleased expression to a worried one.
"Godric I'm sorry. You missed a piece of glass in his shoulder. I pulled it out and it must have cut through the muscle." He turned to the older man, holding out the shard of glass.
"Kaleb you've been a big help. Maybe you should go get cleaned up and rest. You've earned it." Kaleb had to admit, he hated being dismissed, not being one for taking orders but there really was nothing more for him to do here.
As he walked passed Godric, he placed a comforting hand on the man’s shoulder.
“He will be okay Godric, he’s a fighter. A little rest and he will be good as new.” He offered a reassuring smile before giving a quick nod to the women and ducking out of the room.
The smirk seemed to be a permanent fixture on Olivers lips as he quietly slipped out of Nina's room. Although the bit about the nurse costume hadn’t been true, the girl had been a welcome distraction, although it wasn’t her face he wanted to see right now. Taking a few steps down the hall to the same spot he stood nervously the night before, he took a few seconds to smooth down his tousled hair and crumpled shirt before sucking in a deep breath and knocking lightly on the wood. He listened closely as he heard her soft footsteps cross the room and hesitate momentarily before pulling the heavy door open. Oliver could tell instantly he was not a welcome sight, giving him the sudden urge to run away back to Nina's room, to be lost in mindless bliss and not think of any of the troubles that lay in wait. But something about the hurt in Bridgets eyes made him keep his fleet planted as his mind reeled with an apology.
“Bridget…” He spoke her name softly, as if testing out the sound of it on his tongue before continuing.
“I…I’m really sorry for the way I behaved… Embarrassed actually. I shouldn’t have yelled at you like that and would have apologized earlier if Captain hadn’t swept you away from me. You would have thought I was planning to eat you or something…” He tried to offer her a nervous smile but felt it come out as more of a grimace.
PostSubject: Re: Waiting Game   Waiting Game I_icon_minitimeSat Mar 17, 2012 9:31 pm
Bridget retreated quickly, her arm dropping to her side in a heartbeat. She was just about to say something, whether to snap at Oliver or apologize yet she wasn't sure, when Derek fortunately (or unfortunately?) came to her rescue. Steering her away with an obvious lie, Bridget followed without a word. His gentle guidance was much more comforting than arguing with Oliver would have been, she supposed. Part of her wanted to look back and see Oliver's reaction, but they turned the corner too quickly, and so Bridget satisfied herself with hoping that he at least felt bad and decided to focus on Derek.
He was still leading her, like a lost puppy, and Bridget's temper spiked. Since when was she a baby here? When she had last checked, Bridget was a 17 year old Shadowhunter, one of the most talented of her age, and could deal with crazy demons, much less petty disagreements.
"I could have handled that, you know. You had no right to take me out of that. He was no danger to me," Bridget shot at Derek, her frustration from the situation with Oliver finally finding an escape. She knew that she had no right to be angry at Derek, he was just being nice, but still, she was agitated and felt like she was being underestimated. Bridget was a strong, independent girl. She'd been living mostly alone for the past few years. Of course she could take care of herself.
Derek was fumbling with an excuse, trying to calm her down, when the words slipped out. "I care too much for you to let that happen." Bridget's eyes quit burning, the angry tension in her stance relaxed. She took a step back, putting a little distance between them. She felt confused and now she really just wanted to be left alone.
"You're acting like Oliver's some kind of animal. He's not. He's had a rough day; we all have." Bridget silently cursed herself, why was she defending him to Derek. Oliver didn't need to be defended, he had snapped at her. But still, Derek was acting like he'd commited some awful crime, when really Bridget knew Oliver was just worried like everyone else, she'd been able to read it in his eyes.
"I appreciate your concern, but if you don't mind I think I'd like some alone time." She gave him a small, somewhat forced smile to smooth things over, and was about to turn away when she realized that they were no longer alone. Turning to the interruption, Bridget was shocked to see Oliver and her childhood friend, Nina, locked together in an intense make out session.
Blinking quickly, Bridget took only a moment to regain her composure, control the fire-like, raging jealousy that had taken complete control over her. The feeling was unwarranted too, since she had no claim on Oliver and barely even knew him. At least, that's what she told herself.
"I guess you were right, you can handle this on your own," Looking back up at Derek, Bridget regretfully realized that she hadn't been quick enough with keeping her emotions in check, and the tone of his voice and look in his eyes told her so. Bridger didn't say anything as Derek left, door shutting in front of her in a very upsetting way. Why are you upset, you said you wanted alone time, She told herself, trying to make sense of her conflicting emotions.
Oliver and Nina had slipped into her room while Bridget was paying attnetion to Derek, so Bridget withdrew to her own room, closing the door as quietly as possible. She'd had enough of loud, slamming doors for one day. Her little kitten Peaches made a sound of welcome, and then returned to her nap in a patch of sun by the window.
Tossing her white sundress on the bed, Bridget hunted down a pair of shorts and a shirt to change into. Once changed, she stared down at her dress in disgust, immediately unhappy with all that it symbolized. Consequently, she threw it on the floor, hoping it would collect dust and never be wearable again.
Letting herself fall onto her bed, Bridget stared up at the ceiling. Her fists were unknowingly scrunched in fists, nails digging into her palms as the emotions of the day crashed down onto her. She refused to cry, was too far gone to even summon a tear, and found that just laying there and breathing took entirely too much energy.
Suddenly a knock broke through Bridget's numbness, and she sighed as she got up. Her head spun a little, and Bridget blinked back the black dots that had appeared in her vision, having gotten up too quickly. She pulled the door open, and it took every ounce of will power she had to not slam it closed again. Angrily, Bridget crossed her arms and bit her tongue.
“I…I’m really sorry for the way I behaved… Embarrassed actually. I shouldn’t have yelled at you like that and would have apologized earlier if Captain hadn’t swept you away from me. You would have thought I was planning to eat you or something…” Bridget glared as apologized. Had she not just been a witness to his earlier scene with Nina, she would have been perfectly happy accepting his apology, but now there was no way she could. Besides, it felt nice to be angey with someone.
"Well, Derek couldn't be sure. Especially now that he knows the way you were devouring Nina over there," Bridget spat. The heated words brought her no comfort, no relief, and Bridget rolled her eyes, whether at herself or at Oliver she couldn't be sure. Leaning against her door frame, arms still crossed, she didn't return his smile and instead watched him, ready to counter whatever reaction he was about to give her.
Waiting Game Empty
PostSubject: Re: Waiting Game   Waiting Game I_icon_minitimeSat Mar 17, 2012 10:47 pm
She was sitting on the floor of the weapons room, head in her hands, trying to mentally force out all her thoughts concerning Jasper, when the noise of the commotion first hit her. At first she'd just thought the other prissy pants Shadowhunters had gotten into a scuffle, but, the longer she listened, the more urgent things started to sound. Picking herself up from the hard ground, she hesitantly made her way down to the entry way, her headache of thoughts forgotten for the moment.
No wonder I could hear them from so far away, Mikki thought, as she looked on the mess of people all jumbled together before her. There was so much noise, so much damn noise that she just wanted to squash her hands over her ears, blocking everyone’s garbled voices. And then she saw him. Bloodied and broken, Jasper was carried through the crowd, barely supported by Godric's hands. A resounding no rebounded across the walls of her head, her lips never moving from their tense shape. For the moment, the fact that she hated the sight of this boy injured failed to bother her. All that mattered was he was inches away from death, and she still hadn't said a word to him.
He was within inches of her, passing up the stairs, when she heard it. A voice filled with pain and yet so soft.
"It....it's not your fault. Y...you didn't know. I'm sorry." It took Mikki a moment to understand what he said. And when she'd finally deciphered his choked out words, he'd already disappeared, leaving her speechless once again.Is the guy completely mental, she thought. It had to be the blood loss. If not, then how the hell was she meant to understand him. The noise fell on her once again, making her want to scream. A royal hissy fit wouldn't help her reputation much around here, so, instead, she chose to wander the halls, the blessedly quiet halls. At least there she could make sense of all these words and emotions, emotions she was basically a stranger too. Acting the loner left little room for experience with feelings.
A stone corner, shadowed and vacant, seemed as perfect a place as any to dissect her own brain. Sliding her back against the cool stone, she pressed her hands to her eyes, willing the answers to appear before her. He'd apologized? She'd insulted his parents, recently dead by the amount of pain she'd seen in his eyes, and he was apologizing? It just didn't make sense. He'd been so angry before. Now, anger Mikki could deal with. If he'd have just stayed like that, then things would have been so much simpler. She'd have apologized and gone about her way. But, instead, he'd confused everything, by moving first, a movement of kindness. Random and unexplained kindness, but kindness all the same.
The jarring thud of a door kicked Mikki's instincts into full drive, jolting her legs up, her hands ready for the attack. The Head's, Olivia and Godric, made their way down the hall, their back to her. The door they'd come through was only a few feet from her. Was that where they were keeping Jasper?
The room appeared empty at first, it was that dark. But a flash of movement alerted Mikki to the small infirmary bed and the girl gathering the used bandages next to it. Vanessa stared up at the startled mundane. She looked a lot different from the last time she'd seen her. A lot less hard edged, more vulnerable.
"He's going to be okay, if that's what you're wondering. Still unconscious, but Godric apparently works miracles," Vanessa said crossing the room to Mikki. "I'm finished here, but I'm sure he'd like someone to sit by him. If you weren't too busy, I mean."
A short, curt nod from Mikki was all Vanessa needed. It had been a exhausting day and she was ready to get back to her bed. Looking once more over the bruised boy, she exited the infirmary.
The quietness in the infirmary wasn't the sanctuary it had been to Mikki out in the halls. It reminded her that she was alone with a guy she was far too confused over to be comfortable with. Stop being a pussy and go sit by him, you owe him that much, she urged herself. There was a small, folding chair sitting next to the cot. Taking it, she slowly sat down, eyeing the still form with the same gaze she used for particularly dangerous opponents. She should say something, now, before anything else came up. He probably couldn't hear her, but, what was that old phrase? It was the thought that counts?
"I'm crap at this whole apologizing thing. If you need any proof, it's in the fact that you'll probably not remember a word I'm saying," she laughed drily, her hands a mess of fidgeting. "Still, you deserve one. No offense, but all that stuff you said to me before in the hall was a load of bullshit. Sure, I didn't know about your parents, but I was still an asshole to say the things I did. So, yea. I'm sorry."
Jerking up from her seat, she was halfway to the door when the need caught at her again. The need to understand one thing in all this effed up mess.
"I just want to know one thing. Why did you say those things? You were nice to me when I deserved the punch in the face I know you wanted to give me earlier. No one's ever nice to me. I'm not saying that to gain sympathy; it's just a fact. I like it that way," she said, the words falling, uncontrollably. She'd never said so much to anyone person ever. It was so ridiculous, asking questions of an unconscious Shadowhunter.
A slight rustling made her flick her eyes back up from where they'd been focusing on her feet. His eyes, blue as the sea, stared right back at her.
Egan watched as the chaos unfolded. His eyes taking in the expressions of everyone as the door burst open with a man holding a boy covered in blood. Jasper, Egan guessed, another boy also covered in blood tagging close behind. Everyone got their orders and Egan sat there with a perked brow. He figured he was all but forgotten until Derek suggested to Bridget to lead him and the new girl Nina to their rooms. He collected his duffel bag and followed behind the two girls. There was something off with the two sibling but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
As they came to the hallway of rooms Bridget stopped at one and pointed this out to be his. Egan gave a pleasant smile, seeing that the girl didn't want to be showing him his room when someone was bleeding out somewhere in the Institute. Egan looked over at Nina as she exclaimed that she was happy to be so close. His eyes narrowed, this girl seemed to be trying too hard to him. Egan shrugged, "Thank you miss." He said, his southern drawl apparent in his voice. It was the first time he had spoken since he got here. He took hold of his bag and eased inside, closing the door and sighing.
Of course I would come at perhaps the most awful time in recorded history... Egan thought to himself as he threw his bag close to his bed. The room was nothing special. The colors were dull and in desperate need of a repaint. He wanted to do something, but what could he do that someone else was not doing themselves. They seemed to have it under control. He would only be in the way. Egan took off his jacket and let it fall to the ground as he walked to one of the high set windows. He pushed the curtains back and let the moonlight in. All seemed quiet for a while until he heard voices. Egan went to the door and popped it open a tad to see Bridget, Derek, Nina, and Oliver. Nina and Oliver were, quite close.
A little too close and Egan again wondered what this girl's true intentions were. It all seemed too fast to him. Derek mumbled something to Bridget and left in a haste and Bridget retreated to her room as Nina and Oliver made their way in their room. Egan shut his door silently and shook his head. Things were certainly interesting. Egan went to his bed and sat on the edge and then fell back staring up at the ceiling feeling alone in his alien place.
Waiting Game Empty
PostSubject: Re: Waiting Game   Waiting Game I_icon_minitimeSun Mar 18, 2012 9:48 am
After what seemed like another eternity in darkness Jasper's senses started returning to him. He wasn't aware anyone was in the room until he'd heard her. "I'm crap at this whole apologizing thing. If you need any proof, it's in the fact that you'll probably not remember a word I'm saying," a dry laugh broke her words up but she continued, "Still, you deserve one. No offense, but all that stuff you said to me before in the hall was a load of bullshit. Sure, I didn't know about your parents, but I was still an asshole to say the things I did. So, yea. I'm sorry." Things went quite for a minute after that. Jasper still couldn't see clearly but he could make out where she was standing. Staring directly down at her own feet. Another silent moment then Mikki spoke again, "I just want to know one thing. Why did you say those things? You were nice to me when I deserved the punch in the face I know you wanted to give me earlier. No one's ever nice to me. I'm not saying that to gain sympathy; it's just a fact. I like it that way." He wanted to reply but he couldn't. His voice just wouldn't come to him. As Mikki seemed like she was giving up and leaving Jasper used all the strength he had to focus himself. Vision cleared, slight movement returned, he was even able to speak lightly. Managing to shift his weight and sit upright, he caught Mikki's attention. She had froze mid step and looked at him. She was stunning. After a moment of just staring at eachother Jasper spoke. "You're right. You were an asshole. But you had no idea my parents had been killed. Let alone by vampires. The chance you had in saying that was one in a million and you nailed it. You should probably play the lottery." He managed a wry smile. At least a smile for him. He could feel the cuts on his face and around his mouth as the muscles moved. After a moment where Mikki didn't speak, Jasper decided to keep going. His voice only a little more than a whisper. It sounded like he'd gotten glass in his throat. "I believe you also asked why I was nice to you. Because that's the real me. The person you saw earlier, the anger filled lunatic, that's not me. I blew up because I was feeling sorry for myself. But as you can see, anger gets you no where," He justured to himself bandaged, bloody, and bruised in the infirmary bed. "Truth be told I have feelings for you Mikki. Ever since I laid eyes on you kicking the shit out of that werewolf. That was badass. Even most Nephilim girls don't dish out beatings like that. Needless to say it surprised me. Not because your a girl. But because your gorgeous, "He lifted his right arm and pointed at the mirror on the wall opposite the two of them, "The girl right there. She's not only stunning, but she's a badass. Sure you have the mouth of a sailor and very headstrong. But that's what I like about you. You're not just another stupid girl. You're perceptive and very skilled which leads me to believe you were trained by someone not mundane. But that's not the topic right now." He had to pause to catch his breath. Even with his runes, the broken ribs were being a major pain in the ass. Jasper went to shif his weight again and winced in pain from the ribs. Mikki made a movement to help but Jasper held his hand up. Having caught his breath he continued. "Why do you think I took knife when I tackled you? Why do you think I stormed out of that room? It wasn't because I was mad at you. Ok it was partly that, but mainly I was disgusted in how I portrayed myself." Man I sound really stupid right now. He'd said his peace and figured Mikki didn't want to hear it. "I understand if you don't want to talk to me again. You don't have to stay. I'll be ok. Quick healer and all." Forcing another grimace laced smile at the last word he stared down at his cut up hand, waiting to hear Mikki leave the room. Leave him completely alone.
Blindsided, that’s what Oliver felt at Bridgets words. How could he not have noticed them in the hall? Apparently Nina was a better distraction then he gave her credit for. ‘Great, so she saw me slip into the room of another girl and now here I am on her doorstep like a jackass. Such a gentleman.’ He thought, feeling defeated though he had to admit he deserved anything she threw at him. Unfortunately for him though he wasn’t one for apologizing to begin with so now that he met his quota for the year, he seemed unable to do it again. Her anger just adding on to everything else that happened that day, he had reached his limit. Using what little energy he had left, he turned his grimace into a scowl, narrowing his eyes at her.
“If you wanted to join us, all you had to do was ask. Would have been worth it just to see the look on Prince Charming’s face.” He spat back at her, venom dripping from every word. Despite his anger, he regretted the words as they left his lips but it was too late. Shame for what he had done anger for getting caught, worry for his wounded friend and just sheer exhaustion from the day’s events crashed over him like a tidal wave pulling him out to sea. And with an exasperated growl, he turned on his heel and marched away from Bridget before he could see the irreparable damage his words had done.
As Oliver marched down the hall, he had to keep from screaming in an attempt to drown out his own thoughts, longing for a bottle of anything to dull the pain but there was one more thing he needed to do before he retreated to his room with what remained of the wine from the kitchen and drink himself into oblivion. When he reached the door to the hospital, he didn’t hesitate before barging in, still lost in his own thoughts but when his eyes adjusted to the dim lighting he froze. It was impossible to miss Jasper, laying on his cot but who was that other form? When he recognized the girl it was all he could do not to growl in frustration.
“The cherry on top of a fantastic day.” He growled under his breath, immediately becoming defensive and rushing to his friends aid.
“Really? Driving him to this wasn’t enough, now you need to gloat about it? You really are a piece of work aren’t you?” He snapped at Mikki but when he got a closer look at the scene, he fell silent. Jasper didn’t look defensive in the slightest, in fact he looked pleased. Well that was until Oliver had interrupted what was going on. When he saw the annoyance flash across his friends face, he threw his hand up defensively.
“Or I can come back later…” He offered, taking a few steps back. As much as he disliked the mundane, he didn’t need Jasper of all people mad at him too.
“I’ll just go wait over there.” He said, pointing to a chair by the door. He flopped down in the chair, out of earshot of the other two and dropped his head into his hands, what little energy he had left draining away. His only thought as he avoided looking at whatever the hell was going on at the other side of the room was that he needed to work on his people skills.
Waiting Game Empty
PostSubject: Re: Waiting Game   Waiting Game I_icon_minitimeSun Mar 18, 2012 8:06 pm
Mikki couldn't believe it. He was awake, awake and staring at her with an intensity that immediately made her want to run. Not because it bothered her, but because she knew she was staring right back at him in that same way. She'd emptied all her muddled thoughts onto a seemingly unconscious guy and, now, it seemed like he might have heard it all. Maybe, for once in her life, she'd catch a break and he hadn't. Because, deep down, she knew she wasn't ready to deal with the things she'd said and his response to them. Give her the choice between slaughtering a monster and sitting down to deal with her feelings for a guy, and Mikki would jump on the former in a heart beat.
"You're right. You were an asshole. But you had no idea my parents had been killed. Let alone by vampires. The chance you had in saying that was one in a million and you nailed it. You should probably play the lottery," Jasper rasped out, his voice catching on a dry laugh. Well, now it was obvious he'd heard. Mikki could already feel the need to run rushing back up on her. But she didn't. Even stranger, the guy had just called her an asshole, and she wasn't feeling the need to punch his face in. Sure, she'd placed the insult first, but it was still really unusual that she wasn't enraged right now. Noticing his expectant expression, wanting her to say something, Mikki tried to make her mouth form the words. But they just weren't there.
"I believe you also asked why I was nice to you. Because that's the real me. The person you saw earlier, the anger filled lunatic, that's not me. I blew up because I was feeling sorry for myself. But as you can see, anger gets you no where. Truth be told I have feelings for you Mikki. Ever since I laid eyes on you kicking the shit out of that werewolf. That was badass. Even most Nephilim girls don't dish out beatings like that. Needless to say it surprised me. Not because your a girl. But because your gorgeous," he said, lifting his arm to one of the only mirrors in the infirmary. Even though she knew what she'd find in the depths of the mirror, a punk ass chick with a vendetta against everyone, Mikki shifted her gaze.
She barely recognized herself, and it scared the shit out of her. Her face looked years younger, a vulnerability softening her normally hard edges. The wall, that was invisible to everyone else but always stood out clearly to her, lay in a shattered mess. How had she let this happen? The answer was there, on the cot next to her. Jasper. The boy who'd just called her gorgeous and a badass. He was being kind again, complimenting her, opening herself to how sad a person she'd become. She didn't even know what to do when someone said something nice! Through all the years of fighting, she'd neglected a very important part of herself. Busy being the robot, she'd broken her humanity. Could this Shadowhunter possibly fix her?
"The girl right there. She's not only stunning, but she's a badass. Sure you have the mouth of a sailor and very headstrong. But that's what I like about you. You're not just another stupid girl. You're perceptive and very skilled which leads me to believe you were trained by someone not mundane. But that's not the topic right now. Why do you think I took knife when I tackled you? Why do you think I stormed out of that room? It wasn't because I was mad at you. Ok it was partly that, but mainly I was disgusted in how I portrayed myself."
Half way through, Jasper had winced, the conversation obviously taking a toll on his beaten body. In that instant, she'd made a move to help him. Why? Because she couldn't stand to see him in pain. He was lying there, opening himself up for her to read all his thoughts, just like she'd tried to do with him. He admired her, liked her. These were verbs that Mikki had never had used in the same sentence with her name. She had to admit, it felt good. New and a hell load of scary, but good.
"I understand if you don't want to talk to me again. You don't have to stay. I'll be ok. Quick healer and all." His words were an obvious shutdown. She could see it in his eyes. He thought he'd made a fool out of himself, talking to an empty room. But, she couldn’t sit there and let him think that.
“Really? Driving him to this wasn’t enough, now you need to gloat about it? You really are a piece of work aren’t you?”
Mikki had never wanted to punch a person so much in her life. The idiot had to come in at the worst possible moment. And, to top it all off, he had the whole situation wrong. She was just about to tell him so, by way of some very unkind words, when she saw him back off. Jasper was obviously feeling some of her frustration. She couldn't help the smirk, as she watched Oliver walk to the other side of the room and sit. She would have preferred him leaving altogether, but his presence wasn't going to stop her from talking to Jasper. Taking a seat back in the chair, she hesitantly looked back up at him.
"Before we were so rudely interrupted, I could tell you thought I didn't want hear a word you were saying. Well, you're wrong, so don't go passing out on me," Mikki said, trying her hand at a small smile. "All those things you said kind of freaked me out. They're actually still freaking me out. Through that whole conversation, I wanted to run. I know that sounds weird, but I'm not like you guys. I wasn't born knowing this world or my place in it. I had to learn, from a very young age, that I had to kill, or be killed myself. So, you see I'm not going to be the typical girl. You deserve one and I really should have run. But, I have these feelings, freaking confusing ones, that just wouldn't let me."
After saying it all, Mikki felt like she'd just run a marathon. Every word she'd said had been a battle to get out, a process of taking her crazy thoughts and turning them into words. But they'd all been true. She still wasn't yet sure of how she felt about Jasper, but she did know that it was a completely new situation. She wanted to know him.
PostSubject: Re: Waiting Game   Waiting Game I_icon_minitimeSun Mar 18, 2012 9:01 pm
Just as Jasper had decided to give up, he heard a familier voice. However this wasn't Mikki. It wasn't a female voice at all. It was Oliver, his friend, the boy who saved his life. “Really? Driving him to this wasn’t enough, now you need to gloat about it? You really are a piece of work aren’t you?” He knew his friend was only looking out for him, but he came in a little to hot. Something most have been bothering him besides this. Deciding on asking him later Jasper shot Oliver a look that he meant to say i'll talk to you in a little bit but in his state it came across as a little annoyance as Oliver raised his hands and walked to the other side of the infirmary and sat down. Brought back by Mikki sitting down in the chair Jasper focused on what she said. "Before we were so rudely interrupted, I could tell you thought I didn't want hear a word you were saying. Well, you're wrong, so don't go passing out on me. All those things you said kind of freaked me out. They're actually still freaking me out. Through that whole conversation, I wanted to run. I know that sounds weird, but I'm not like you guys. I wasn't born knowing this world or my place in it. I had to learn, from a very young age, that I had to kill, or be killed myself. So, you see I'm not going to be the typical girl. You deserve one and I really should have run. But, I have these feelings, freaking confusing ones, that just wouldn't let me." She had smiled mid sentence at her joke and Jasper couldn't help but return a weak smile. "Look at that. I didn't pass out." He joked before answering her, "I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable in any way. That wasn't my intention I swear. If you do want to run, feel free. I'm not going to force you to stay. I just want you to know I care about you, and I care what happens to you."
Thinking back to what his parents had told him about being honest above all made Jasper smile as he looked back down at his mangled arm in a sling. He knew what he was doing may be a little unorthadox condsidering he'd just met Mikki, but he wasn't backing down from what he started. Honesty worked best when the person meant it, and Jasper truly meant what he was saying. A moment of silence passed giving Jasper time alone with his thoughts. He couldn't help this urge he kept getting. The urge to kiss the beautiful girl in front of him. If he was healthy he would have manned up and gotten out of this stupid bed and just done it. However he was in a dilemma. He figured there conversation had just ended because Mikki hadn't said anything since he'd finished speaking so he spoke one last time, "I should probably talk to Oliver, he did save my life. I owe him at least a conversation." He smiled wryly at Mikki as he spoke so he didn't seem like he was sending her away becuase he was bored. As Mikki rose from the chair something hit Jasper. The pain he'd felt in his shoulder. It wasn't glass. Someone cut through the muscle. He remembered now. One of the new kids, he was positive of it. I have to warn her the thought ripped through his head so fast it could have casued brain damage. "Mikki wait." He whispered, not wanting to be overheard. Jasper motioned for Mikki to bring her ear close to his mouth so he coud whisper easier, the pain of talking had started kicking in again. When she was in whispering range he said, "This is going to sound weirder than what I just said, but one of the new kids cut the muscle in my shoulder. The one who came in here with Derek. I know it sounds crazy but just be carful please." Before he even knew what he was doing he leaned up and kissed her on her cheek. Embarrassed by himself Jasper immediately rushed to move away, wincing as his ribs were aggrivated by his movement, his cheeks flushed a little red. You're an idiot he thought to himself looking away to hide his face from Mikki.
Waiting Game Empty
PostSubject: Re: Waiting Game   Waiting Game I_icon_minitimeSun Mar 25, 2012 10:08 am
Mikki felt a small burst of relief when Jasper answered her attempt at a smile with a weak one of his own. She could have sworn it had looked more like a grimace than a smile. Maybe she was getting the hang of the whole acting-like-a-human-with-feelings-instead-of-a-soulless-bitch thing. Who knew.
"I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable in any way. That wasn't my intention I swear. If you do want to run, feel free. I'm not going to force you to stay. I just want you to know I care about you, and I care what happens to you," Jasper replied, before both of them fell into a few moments of thoughtful silence. Focusing on what he'd just said, Mikki zeroed in on the last bit of what he'd said. Jasper cared about her. Some part of her had still been holding on to the excuse that maybe, because of his blood loss, his confession of feelings for her before hadn't been truly meant. But, after hearing the emotion in Jasper's voice, Mikki had no choice but to admit that he actually felt the things he said he did. Now, the question of the hour was whether she felt the same things. She knew the answer was there, somewhere deep inside her, manifesting slowly. But, it was still unclear.
"I should probably talk to Oliver, he did save my life. I owe him at least a conversation." Mikki was grateful for the dismissal. Sure, it came at the hands of Oliver the Idiot, but she desperately needed some time to think. Maybe she'd go back to the cool, stone corner that had been such an unusual sanctuary from the noise earlier. Nodding at Jasper, she got up from her seat, and was turning to head out the door when she heard her name whispered.
"Mikki wait." Jasper was motioning her back to the cot, a expression on his face completely different from the one from only a few seconds earlier. Mikki could tell it was something important, so she warily made her way back to him, inching closer than before so she could catch his whispered words. At such a close proximity, she couldn't help but breathe in the smell of clean soap and leather that still lingered over him.
"This is going to sound weirder than what I just said, but one of the new kids cut the muscle in my shoulder. The one who came in here with Derek. I know it sounds crazy but just be carful please," Jasper urgently whispered. Mikki remembered the guy he spoke of, a dark, shadowy character she'd noted even through the noise from earlier. He'd stood so still, so calm amidst the teeming masses of rushing people. She had no idea why a newcomer would intentionally injure Jasper, but from what she'd seen in the entry hall and from the genuine urgency in Jasper's voice she believed it completely. So engrossed was she in what he'd just shared with her, Mikki hardly noticed the slight movement before Jasper's lips touched her cheek. They were soft and warm, brushing her skin only briefly. But it was like a shock of electricity had been directed straight into her bloodstream, causing her to tense up from her crouched position by his bed. She could tell he hadn't planned on the kiss happening; his embarrassment told her that much.
"Get better," she shot out, awkwardly. There was so much more she could have said, should have said. How the kiss hadn't been what she expected. And, strangely, in a good way. But, once again, she couldn't find the words. The need to run won her over, moving her feet away from the cot, past the waiting Shadowhunter, and out the door. Standing in the stone hall, she was bombarded by noise again, but, this time, it came from within. A small, stone corner wouldn't soothe the confusion this time. The stone halls had turned into an enemy, closing her in with her thoughts, suffocating her. She needed to be out in the open.
It took her a while to find the elevator again, but Mikki was persistent as usual. She had no idea whether it would take her where she wanted or not. All she knew was that, if she stayed still, the noise in her mind would completely take over. Fortunately, the metal doors opened onto the roof. A cool, night breeze, floated over her, causing her to pull her leather jacket closer around her, as she sought out a place to rest. A rusted lawn chair proved the only selection. Mikki gladly sunk onto the creaking contraption that she was sure would collapse any second. She'd been right about being outside; the New York City night air, filled with the dulled hum of cars far below, seemed to cleanse some of the painful chatter in her mind. Looking up, Mikki was surprised to find the twinkling of stars staring back at her. Normally, the smog was so thick that stargazing was an impossibility. But, tonight was different, in more ways than one.
As the hours ticked by, the girl with the healing humanity lost herself in the constellations.
Oliver lifted his head as Mikki walked past; avoiding looking at her since he wasn’t fully convinced he could manage a glare. Resisting the urge to stick his foot out and trip her, he got to his feet and crossed the room to the end of Jaspers bed. He hesitated for a moment, getting a look at his friend. He could deal with the blood and gore, but all the white bandages and sterile smells made him twitch. He moved to the side of the bed and flopped down in the char seated beside the bed.
“So…” He started, giving his best attempt at a teasing smile.
“Up for a drink?” He asked, raising an eyebrow, only half joking. His eyes felt heavy from the day’s exertions and he longed to find a dark corner to pass out in but he tried his best to hide his exhaustion, tried to keep his tone light rather than weighed down by the drama of the day. Avoiding looking at any of the bandages, he occupied himself by picking flecks of dried blood, both his own and his friends off of his hands.
“I don’t need to hold your hand or anything, right?”
